KCBS Radio taps GreenState for inside scoop on weed at the Calif. State Fair
The Calif. State Fair made history this year with its first in the nation on-site cannabis sales and consumption. The development has piqued the interest of media, out-of-state cannabis regulators, and consumers alike. Many wonder how selling and smoking pot at the event is possible, especially when it comes to compliance and safety.
KCBS Radio had the same question, reaching out to GreenState editor and California State Fair Cannabis Awards emcee Rachelle Gordon to provide clarity.

During a recent 8:30 a.m. drivetime newscast, anchors Margie Shafer and Eric Thomas asked Gordon about precisely how retail sales and consumption work at the Fair.
“Guests 21 and over can enter a wonderfully curated cannabis exhibit and learn all about the plant and learn about the history of cannabis in California,” she explained, adding guests can then exit into a dispensary area presented by cannabis retailer Embarc.
“Once they make their purchase, they can either hang out there in the on-site lounge or put their purchases back in their bags and enjoy the fair. It’s quite a lovely experience.”
Another thing to note? There is no outside cannabis allowed in the consumption space, but there are plenty of smoking accessories available to help keep guests lit. Stage programming and a variety of lawn games entertain consumers seeking a break from the rides, animal exhibits, and funnel cakes.

Thomas followed up by asking Gordon to elaborate on the first state-sanctioned weed contest in the country. The cannabis competition initially only included flower, but 2024 was the first year with finished goods like concentrates, edibles, and vape carts.
“California State Fair really understood the diversity of consumers and wanted to make sure that everyone was represented in the contest this year and beyond,” Gordon said.
The California State Fair runs through July 28, with on-site cannabis sales and consumption open until 10:00 p.m. nightly. GreenState will continue to offer exclusive updates from within the historic plant-based exhibit through the official awards ceremony and beyond.
