The Mimosa strain is just one of many 2010s cannabis trends that helped build the culture today. Mimosa was bred by Michael and Vince, co-founders at Symbiotic Genetics. They are the same crew responsible for Banana Punch, Wedding Crasher, and Purple Punch 2.0. They released Mimosa in 2017 when Tangie and other orange phenotypes were sharing the podium with dessert strains as most coveted by consumers and growers.
Mimosa is a cross of Clementine and Purple Punch. The creators’ goal was to capture a sweet citrus terpene profile that also makes excellent hash.
“We wanted to not only have the strong flavor and smell associated with citrus strains, but we also wanted something commercially viable from a growers standpoint,” Michael shared with GreenState.

Creating the Mimosa strain
The duo challenged themselves to test lots of phenotypes before releasing a winner to the public. In order to properly stabilize the new strain, the small operation enlisted the help of the Jungle Boys crew to test out the new cross.
Jungle Boys tested the genetics at their facility, providing feedback, data, and photos that helped Vince and Michael hone in on a selection worthy of being released. They also released finished flowers into the LA market. The goal was to build a strain that thrived in multiple grow mediums and methods, and Vince believes they have succeeded in the mission.
“When it comes to growing Mimosa, she is one of the easier plants,” Vince said. “Showing lots of vigor, she excels indoor, outdoor, and greenhouse and is one of our favorite plants to grow and breed with.”
Mimosa seeds became high value once perfected, Michael told GreenState podcast Smoke & Bridges. There were only 400 packs released between two stores, and people lined up for their chance to cop a few. Some lucky recipients started holding auctions, and seed packs started going for $1500 to $2000. This could have been due to hype, or the true value offered by the phenotype.
The first Mimosa phenotype improved on its wily parent, Clementine. It grows stockier and more manageable in small spaces while still delivering the desired scent and hashiness. This creation delivered on being viable for commercial cultivation operations, and it also fuels a solid consumer experience.
The Mimosa strain experience
Mimosa grows dense colas that converge into purple hues at the tip. The scent is strongly citrus with funky hints of skunk. A similar flavor profile coats the mouth, lingering long after the exhale.
“The smells and flavors of Mimosa can range from sweet candy-like citrus to rotten orange peels and skunk,” said Michael. “There are also some phenotypes that lean towards the Purple Punch F2 father that will have a more Hawaiian Punch or Blue Powerade-like profile. It’s a strain that really stands out in the terpene department, with a very distinct and loud nose to it.”

This cannabis strain delivers on the original goal: a hash-tastic overflowing bowl of oranges. Mimosa has gone on to create:
- Candied Orange (Zkittlez x Mimosa)
- Ginger Mints (Kush Mints x Mimosa)
- Nam Wah (Banana OG x Mimosa)
- Among others
Eight years after it became a powerhouse new seed in the culture, Mimosa continues making it onto dispensary menus. That is a true testament to flavor, effect, and, in this case, solid breeding.
A citrus weed dream
Mimosa is one flavor in the bouquet of offerings from Symbiotic Genetics. Michael’s favorites are Modified Grapes, Candied Oranges, and Orange Taffy. Vince’s top three include Amarelo, Sour Taffy, and Banana Punch–for those interested. Whether the Mimosa strain makes the favorites list or not, no one can deny its place in cannabis history.
