Honeybuns strain information and review

The ever-growing weed library features almost every flavor, from Cherry Burgers to the Honeybuns strain. These names can come from the aroma or taste of the flower or its lineage. When it comes to the Honeybuns strain created by Dewey Cannabis, the moniker was inspired by a little bit of both.
Honeybuns is a cross of Honeycomb and Crème Brûlée, two phenotypes bred by the Washington state brand in 2020. It is not the first Dewey strain I’ve reviewed. Glitter Party and Purple Mango are two other favorites in the rotation. But I promise to fairly judge this recent installment to their heavy-hitting indica lineup.

Creating the Honeybuns strain
Dewey released Honeybuns in November 2024, and founder Jordan Zager, PhD let GreenState in on the secret sauce behind its creation.
“We made this cross to introduce the powdery mildew resistance of Crème Brûlée into the Honeycomb lineage while also selecting for yield, potency, and an incredibly unique aroma,” Zager said. “The standout phenotype from this cross delivers a rich, sweet, baked-good scent that immediately set it apart. Given its lineage, naming it Honeybuns just made sense.”
I picked up some Honeybuns from my local dispensary to see what the magic was about.
The flower is purple and a dimmed lime green. Brown orange hairs appear in tufts around the fat pine tree-shaped flower. The appearance was enjoyable, but the scent truly drew me in.
There is a richness in the aroma that brought my mind to a crisp, sweet pastry. I don’t sense an outward fruit, but the sweetness and the fact that it is cannabis tricked my brain into searching for lemons or berries. When my nose dove deeper into the terpene profile, I found warm cinnamon and sweet dough instead. The flavor is sugared but grounded in a bit of earthiness.
Honeybuns appearance, smell, and taste
It took me a moment to adjust after I ripped some through my Weeday bong. I felt very stoned immediately. The muscles in my eyes and cheeks felt heavy. As I settled into that come-up, I remembered that I had a body and relaxed. Whether my muscles were clenched from the jolt of the flower hitting my lungs or the stress of being a human adult on a Monday, they weren’t about five to seven minutes after the smoke hit my lungs.
The first moments of the Honeybuns strain are not ideal for a highly functional task or conversation. Honeybuns requires a bit of a launch period. By that, I mean sit down and vibe a bit. You have to slink slowly into Honeybuns, don’t puff a tough one, and immediately go chop vegetables for dinner. That said, this weed strain is highly functional once you settle in and the high plateaus.
“Honeybuns is perfect for anyone looking to unwind and relax without being completely glued to the couch,” explained Zager. “It offers a calming body high while still keeping the mind somewhat engaged—some users describe a spacey, almost dreamy cerebral effect.”
The founder recommends this one for movie nights, listening to records, and decompressing after a long day. I agree with that assessment and add stargazing, sheet fort building, and walking the dogs as Honeybuns-worthy activities.
For the growers in the audience, the plant is high-yielding and heavy on trichome production. Pair that with the unique aroma and mold-resistant breeding; sounds as nice to cultivate as it is to smoke.

Fresh-baked off those Honeybuns
Zager regards Honeybuns as a distinctly new sensory experience in the Dewey lineup of heavier strains.
“While it delivers the potency and relaxing effects expected from an indica-leaning cultivar, its aroma is what makes it truly unique—a warm, confectionary sweetness that sets it apart from the more gas-heavy or fruit-forward profiles in our catalog,” he shared.
Honeybuns has a complex scent that offers sweetness, but not in the way that I’ve come to expect from the cannabis plant. As a longtime patient and consumer, I love to experience something new in weed. Novelty aside, this strain offers a specialty experience from sniff to smoke. I will buy it again, Honeybuns is perfect for this lover of weighty indica strains.
