Magic mushroom gains popularity amid unknown origins
The verified history of the Z mushroom strain is as elusive as the letter itself. There are as many, if not more, magic mushroom strains as there are cannabis varieties in the world. Each has a distinctly different growing process, which helps dictate slight variances in appearance and effects.
Before going deep on this shroom variety, remember that psilocybin and psilocin are federally illegal. Certain cities and states have decriminalized or legalized therapeutic administration, but laws differ from place to place.
Despite the lack of verification and varying legality, there is some valuable information about the Z strain.
History of Z mushroom strains
Many stories exist about who first isolated the Psilocybe cubensis strain Z mushroom, aka Z Cube. A few random websites claim that American mycologist Paul Stamets was the creator, but unnamed contributors are more likely. One account is that an enthusiast known as “The Keeper” first isolated the morphology from a batch of Golden Teachers.
Light was shed on a Shroomery thread, a forum where magic mushroom lovers gather to share information. This identified The Keeper as shane67. This commenter also claimed that shane67 actually renamed another strain Z, and nobody knows which one.
The final story credits a Shroomery user named Lipa. One account claims that Lipa crossed Mazatapec and Thai Lipa Yai to get the Z Strain. Others share that Lipa is also isolated them from Golden Teachers.
While disagreement regarding their origins are plentiful, many sources agree on what the magic mushrooms look like.
How to spot a Z mushroom
Z mushrooms have morphology and coloring similar to Golden Teachers. The young caps are reddish brown and turn a golden brown as they age. These shroom stipes, where the veil rips from the cap, halfway down their long stems. The gills will be gray before turning dark purple or black with white edges. As such, Z cubes spore prints are brown and dark purple.

Those who have grown Z mushrooms report fast, full flushes.
A Reddit user named Savings_Sorbet5355 said, “Z strain are one of the easiest to grow. I started off growing these, and mine were pretty weak, but it’s all down to genetics/growing conditions and time of year. Temp is a big factor. If you can keep them at a constant 23/25 degrees they are at their happiest. That goes for the grain spawn and fruiting.”
While mycologists continue going off about how quickly Z cubes fruit, the environment plays a huge role. This is much like cannabis, which can differ based on the growing environment. As for effects, little is reported. However, it can be assumed that Z mushrooms will feel similar to other P. cubensis varieties.
Z cubes magic mushrooms are worth investigating
Little is known and verified about magic mushroom strains due to the current legality of the entheogens. What is known about the Z mushroom is intriguing. Whether growing or eating them, Z cubes are a viable option.
