Puffco Pivot: honest take on brand-new weed tech

Puffco pivot: people hand the Pivot over the dinner table

Puffco has been a brand leader in dab device technology since hitting the scene in 2013. The company prides itself as a standard-setter in e-rigs, first with the original Peak, the Proxy, and again with the Peak Pro. Now, the brand dropped a powerful portable dab pen that changes the game.

The company dropped the Pivot this week, a dab device that combines the power of previous products with portability.

“It has always been a goal of ours at Puffco to normalize concentrates in a way that removes the fear that new consumers may have,” CEO and founder Roger Volodarsky said in a press release. “I can confidently say that our devices have led to an increased curiosity around dabs, allowing new consumers an avenue to explore new forms of cannabis consumption in a user-friendly way. The Pivot will only expand on that.”

This addition to the Puffco empire introduces the littlest version of its patented 3D chamber ever. The company revolutionized dab pens in 2014 with the Plus, formerly the Pro. The re-release of that portable dab pen is about one-third the size of the Pivot. It did not feature the 3D chamber capabilities. The Pivot, priced at $130, does just that. It is a hard cut from the Plus back toward the tech that launched Puffco into success.

Using the new Puffco Pivot

Vapes these days are coming with foolproof pictorial manuals on how to use their products, and the Pivot is no different. Open the box to find an instruction booklet, charger, pack of signature Puffco swabs, a small metal dab tool, and the device. Charge the Pivot, run an empty chamber to bake off anything residual from the factory, and it is dab-ready. The device promises 15 uses after a full charge and can be used while charging.

Turn the Puffco Pivot on by holding the long, thin power button for three seconds. It will vibrate, and a white light running from the base up the piece will power up. Click the button three times to check the battery levels, which indicates the charge using green, yellow, or red (lowest) lights. After the specs are checked, it is time to load the 3D chamber.

The mouthpiece pops off to reveal a smaller version of the classic Puffco 3D chamber. It is easily large enough for the Hot Knife and cleaning tools. That is an upgrade from the Plus, which was hard to clean and load due to the size of the ceramic chamber. Once the piece is on and activated, click the button once to select from the usual four Puffco heat settings.

  • Blue: (Low 450°F)
  • Green: (Medium 500°F)
  • Red: (High 550°F)
  • White: (Peak 600°F)

Once selected, hit the button twice and wait 15 to 20 seconds. The Pivot will vibrate once to indicate it is heated. Pull lightly and take shallow hits for the best experience. Keep the device straight up and down while hitting. It is meant to be swabbed after every hit. But if there is still wax in the chamber when it is put down, store it this way, too.

Many small dab pens leave people wanting more. They rarely vaporize the concentrates to produce properly satisfying clouds. The Pivot does.

What makes the Pivot special?

The general Pivot experience is worthwhile, but some secret menu items are worth mentioning. Those who like hot dabs may enjoy Boost Mode. Double-click the button during a sesh to increase the temperature and elongate the sesh time. Feeling extra saucy? Click it three times instead of two for the same effect, plus a groovy light show.

The brand recommends not doing this more than four times. Also, it is not wise to overload these chambers. Smaller dabs and gentle pulls are best to avoid the product getting through airflow chambers into the mechanics.

Customization does not stop with the experience alone. The Pivot launched with mods at the ready. Put the piece onto water-filtered bongs with the glass adaptor. It fits onto 10mm and 14mm glass joints for bigger, cooler hits. The brand also has a two-pack of Pivot 3D chambers for sale, complete with a zip-up carrying case. Load them with the ideal concentrates and pack them for a quick sesh later.

Experiencing the Pivot is reminiscent of trying that first Puffco Peak–it is truly something new. This stands with the Little Dipper Dab Pen. It is a very different device, but perhaps the only comparable item when it comes to the combination of hit quality and portability. Frankly, the culture will appreciate this new addition.

Down for the Pivot

Puffco continues dropping bangers, and the Pivot is no exception. Ease of use, voluptuous dabs, and true portability are a rare combination in the weed game. This device makes it happen. There is space to improve battery life, but if anyone can do it, it will be Puffco.
