New bong calls back old-school cannabis flare

Cannabis connoisseurs who have been down for the plant since before legalization often have stories of strange apparatus used to get high. Knife hits are one classic invention, and the gravity bong is another.

My good friend used to keep her gravity bong, or GT as we lovingly called it, under the sink. It was a trash can filled with water and a two-liter bottle with the cap doctored into a bowl. Sure, this may sound archaic to the garden gummy and penjamin crowd, but that weird setup delivered one of the most delightful, smooth smokes.

While that doesn’t sound like the classiest setup, NWTN Home designed a Deco Gravity Bong that looks like a gorgeous crystal cocktail shaker that works as well as a trash can under the sink. NWTN sent over a clear gravity bong for me to try since the other three colors are currently sold out (never fear, a restock is imminent). Looks like I’m not the only Millennial reliving their youth for $88. Just kidding, everyone will love this perfect combination of design and function whether they take GTs or not.

My experience hitting the NWTN Deco Gravity Bong

To be honest, I was rabid to test this inventive cannabis piece out since I laid eyes on a photo of it, but that has not painted my review. There are a few glass-on-glass gravity bongs on the market, NWTN is not the first—but the unique aesthetics make a new statement. Whether I had a nostalgic connection to gravity bongs or not, the Deco would impress me. Turns out, that was the plan all along. Designer Justin Cohen has previously worked with Puffco, Oscar De La Renta, and other noteworthy brands, and that work culminates in this glass on glass wonder.

“Having previously been in the housewares industry for about a decade, NWTN is a passion project I’ve been cultivating for years,” Cohen shared with GreenState. “Stemming from my love of beautiful timeless objects around the home, we wanted to produce items that bridged the gap between major retail staples and products that would otherwise fall into a rather objectionable category. Enter NWTN Home, drawing inspiration from classics like Tom Dixon, Baccarat and Waterford.”

The NWTN Deco consists of three pieces: a bowl piece topper, the chamber, and the water vessel. Each piece can be removed from the others for easy cleaning, and the chamber has a rubber ring to avoid unnecessary wear on the borosilicate glass.

How to use this gravity bong

The setup was simple. I filled the water chamber a bit under halfway, but an image on the brand website shows it almost full. The amount of water in the chamber will change how cool the smoke gets and possibly how big the rip is. More water equals less space for smoke to build. After the water level is selected, pack the bowl on top with ground flower, and the Deco is ready to hit.

Get the piece going by putting flame to the flower while slowly and simultaneously lifting the chamber. The lifting creates airflow like someone drawing breath in a pipe or bong while lighting a bowl. Lifting the chamber slowly helps the bowl catch and produce smoke. Watch the smoke develop and pull the chamber up until the desired amount sits inside the pipe.

When ready, pull the bowl piece off the chamber, place your lips to the opening, and inhale while pushing down. If the water is quite full, be careful not to suck in water as you get to the bottom. Since I filled my water lower than usual, there was no splash risk. I could also clear it like a bong after the chamber and water components were resting together.

The smoke was tasty, cooled down, and thick. I was able to consume my flower to the fullest with the Deco, and I’m excited to show it off as weed-friendly buds visit. This piece would look gorgeous on an art deco bar cart next to a cocktail shaker and some cannabis cocktail bibles.

And once my kid is not a counter surfer (a.k.a. he grabs everything he gets his hands on), I plan to display mine that way. Until then, it looks gorgeous next to my milk glass jewelry dishes safe upstairs away from toddler’s hands.

Everyone wins when innovation and alluring design meet

NWTN Home knocked this one out of the park if it’s up to me. A design that fits into a modern living space paired with a nostalgic consumption method makes this a top-tier piece. Entertaining a weed crowd has never been classier than with the Deco Gravity Bong, but it’s not just for guests. This uncommon bong hits so well, that it is worth a spot in the regular rotation.
