I tried the new Puffco Peak, here’s how it dabbed

New cannabis technology tickles me, and Puffco is often a provider of those fuzzy feelings. Their most recent addition to the Puffco clan is the New Peak, an update on the classic flagship product that is now retired.

I got to try the New Peak with GreenState Editor Rachelle on Instagram Live, and the experience speaks for itself.

This piece brilliantly marries what made the original Peak great with tech from the Puffco Peak Pro, only updating what is necessary without flamboyant bells and whistles. The New Peak has a 3D chamber, Joystick Cap, and enhanced glass. These three features noticeably improve the user experience.

The brand released the Peak Pro in 2020, a larger rig with more tech accessibility. Most notably, it Bluetooth-paired with an app that lets users set the temperature to the degree. The New Peak Pro was released later with a 3D chamber and larger Joystick Cap to fanfare before this latest drop.

The New Peak brings much of the New Pro technology minus app-pairing abilities. For many, that is more than enough.

“Following the success of the Peak Pro and our introduction of the discrete Proxy, there was a clear market for a device that marries power and accessibility,” CEO Roger Volodarsky said in a press release. “With the New Peak, we’re providing consumers with an option that is just that.

Puffco New Peak specs and deets

The original Peak featured a regular ceramic chamber, but the new model utilizes the 3D chamber. The 3D heats more quickly, leading to longer battery life and, according to Redditors, better hits. Like the old one, the New Peak still works while charging, and all glass accessories will fit into the base.

The Joystick is another addition from the Peak Pro that was not previously available on the standard Peak. This accessory maximizes vapor production by increasing airflow a bit. It may also cool the hit, but I can not prove this. The Joystick on the New Peak is smaller and lower-profile than the Peak Pro but works just as well.

This updated iteration also has a new glass piece, which comes to a more rounded point than its predecessor. This may increase airflow. If not, its rounded edges are more aesthetically pleasing. Overall, the New Peak offers a peek into the technology of a Peak Pro without the high price tag.

Unboxing the magnetic, fancy black box that contains the New Peak, dab tool, signature Puffco pointed-end cotton swabs, and a charger is akin to opening up a new iphone. I couldn’t wait to dig in and try it.

Trying the New Puffco Peak

There are only pluses for the New Peak, a take on the tech of the Pro in a smaller package. I have used Puffco products for some time, so starting it up was self-explanatory, as this e-rig follows the button sequences and color temperature indications from previous iterations. It also fits perfectly in my hand, which I like.

Hold down the front button for three seconds. Instead of the former round button, this model features a sleek indent. The button is at the top of the groove, closest to the chamber. When it fires up, the Peak will vibrate. Click the button once to cycle through the four colors.

The color lights up a strip on the piece, in order it displays Blue (450°F), Green (500°F), Red (550°F), and White (600°F). Lower temps equal more flavor and lower vapor production. Higher selections will create hefty plumes with fewer terpenes in the hit. Push the button twice while the preferred color is lit, and the LED light band will pulse, indicating that the Peak is heating.

I loaded some saucy Slurricane wax with my Hot Knife and selected Green. About 20 seconds later, vapor escaped from the Joystick, and I started pulling. It took me a few drags to hit it with the perfect velocity, but once I did, the rig was easy to hit and worth the work.

The New Peak delivers a thoughtful user experience with relevant touches that make me feel like they listen to their consumers. It is also possible they use their own tech and improve the things that could be improved. I appreciate the attention to detail without adding bojangles that nobody needs. I’m looking at you, vibrating grinder.

New Peak final word: worth the wait

Puffco has once again outdone itself by improving on a flagship product in an elegant and noteworthy way. Offering almost the same technology at a lower price creates more access for consumers who would like to be in the Puffco fam. While $220 is still a lot, it’s a far cry from the $420 it takes to get a Puffco Peak.

I enjoyed hitting my New Peak and think that those saving up for a Puffco themselves would, too. The water filtration is smoother than the Proxy, though the Proxy is a great little pipe, and the tech is almost up to par with the Pro. Summit the New Peak if you can. The view is worth the wait.
