The hype behind hash holes – everything you need to know
What is the deal with hash hole joints? If you’re on the cannabis side of social media, you’ve likely seen a picture of a hash hole pop up on your feed once, twice… or twelve times a week.
Besides the fact that they look really cool, hash holes are also super potent and offer a unique smoking experience.

The origin of hash holes
In 2018, cannabis cultivator Shant Damirdjian (A.K.A. Fidel) created the first known hash hole. After he posted a photo of the hash hole on Instagram to his 38,000+ followers, interest in these innovative joints grew exponentially. As such, hash holes, also often referred to as doughnut joints, snake holes, and wormholes, have taken the cannabis industry by storm.

People are seeking higher potency or additional flavors in their joints. This is the genesis of infused joints. Specifically, hash holes are joints infused with rosin. Rosin isn’t dry or powdery, nor is it very liquid, so you can’t just sprinkle or spray it. Instead, cannabis operators roll a small ball of rosin between their hands to form a “worm,” which they then place in the middle of the joint or blunt while rolling it. (Side note: while many are rolled by hand, there are machines that can create hash holes, too.)
One notable result of infusing a joint this way is that the heat gets drawn towards the rosin in the middle, acting like a rod of fuel. This creates a distinctive burn pattern, known as a “donut” burn profile, where the outer ring is red, and the inner ring turns to gray ash. This visual effect is where the term “hash hole” comes from. And hence, why hash holes look so cool.
Who loves hash holes and why?
Rosin is especially popular among cannabis enthusiasts because it’s a solventless concentrate created using ice water and pressure, without any solvents like ethanol or butane. Thus, rosin appeals to those concerned about the purity of their pre-rolls, as it’s free from residual chemicals.
The appeal of hash holes spans multiple demographics. On one hand, you have people who are health conscious and care about what they put in their bodies. On the other hand, there are those who enjoy the potent effects, great taste, and cool look of hash holes. These infused joints also resonate with OG cannabis enthusiasts because it reminds them of what they used to smoke.

Typically, hash holes offer a more flavorful and smoother smoking experience. They also burn longer and more evenly than other products with the proper heat distribution. For example, when you light a hash hole and start inhaling, the heat is drawn towards the center, where the rosin is located.
Unlike other infused products where the concentrate is mixed throughout the flower and gets incinerated, the heat in a hash hole vaporizes the rosin. So it’s like you’re smoking a dab and flower simultaneously, resulting in a less bitter, less harsh experience.
What makes it even better is that the heat’s focus on the center helps prevent the joint from running or canoeing, which is when one side burns faster than the other. With hash holes, the even burn ensures a longer-lasting product. Plus, because rosin is a more flavorful concentrate and isn’t burned in the process, you get a better flavor experience while smoking a hash hole.
What to look for in a quality hash hole joint
First, it’s important to verify the brand you’re purchasing from uses high-quality flower and rosin. For newer consumers unfamiliar with different brands, the best approach is to talk to knowledgeable budtenders at reputable dispensaries. These experts can provide insights into the quality of the products.

Additionally, online platforms offer reviews and testimonials that can help you decide which brand (and associated hash hole) is best for you.
Where are hash holes headed?
In the past 12 to 18 months, there’s been an increase in demand for rosin-infused products like hash holes. As more cannabis companies add hash holes to their product line, I believe we’ll see a similar trend with hash holes as we did with multi-pack pre-rolls. As they grow even more popular, companies will create them in easily consumable half-gram or one-gram joints, making them accessible to a broader market.
