Cypress Hill thanks marijuana for Hollywood Walk of Fame induction
One of cannabis culture’s most popular music groups is now immortalized on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.
The Los Angeles-based hip hop group Cypress Hill was honored Thursday morning with their own star on the famous boulevard, reports CBS LA.
Cypress Hill celebrates the occasion to cap their 30th anniversary as one of the most influential groups in rap music as well as cannabis advocacy. Their impressive song catalog includes such pot smoking anthems as “Hits From the Bong,” “I Want to Get High,” and “Dr. Greenthumb.”
Frontman B-Real (Louis Freese) told Variety that the four-man ensemble credits marijuana for their health and longevity.
“We’re medicating,” explained B-Real. “We’re eating clean. We stay in the gym. We never did party too excessively. We party, but it’s not every night and we’re not drunk and sloppy. Weed was the answer for us.”
The West Coast group includes B-Real and co-founders Sen Dog (Senen Reyes) and Lawrence “DJ Muggs” Muggerud, as well as former Beastie Boys percussionist Eric “Bobo” Correa. Cypress Hill initially won crowds with B-Real’s nasal vocal delivery paired with Sen Dog’s gruff vocals on their self-titled 1991 debut. They would eventually gain heavy rotation on MTV with the hit single, “Insane in the Brain.”
Cypress Hill’s cannabis advocacy has also led to success in the legal marijuana industry. B-Real is the owner of the LA-based Dr. Greenthumb dispensary, while the group sells its own brand of cannabis known as Cypress Hill Bhang.
“Being away from friends and family and the comforts of home is tough. Sure, we’ve had our disagreements like brothers do. Every band goes through it,” said B-Real to Variety. “Clearly, cannabis has been a big factor in keeping us together.”
