‘They couldn’t afford me’: Tiffany Haddish reveals Freak Brothers producers paid her in pot

Celebrities often make creative deals. Whether it’s an uncredited cameo or a multimillion-dollar franchise, stars (and their managers) do what it takes to land the roles they covet. Sometimes, fringe benefits are offered. In the case of actress and comedian Tiffany Haddish, securing a spot on the popular cartoon The Freak Brothers meant getting in the weeds.

“They couldn’t afford me,” she told GreenState,  on being approached to appear on the series.

Haddish had been a fan of the show’s inspiration, counterculture comic The Fabulous Freak Brothers, back in the day. She wanted to do the show, and when the producers offered her ownership in the Freak Brothers cannabis brand as a way to sweeten the pot, it was a done deal.

The resulting line has several products, including packaged eighths, vapes, and pre-roll packs. Dubbed Kitty Walkers, the brand’s joints are named after Haddish’s Freak Brothers feline character. They’re the perfect companion to the stoner-friendly show about three San Francisco hippies who get transported from the 1960s to modern times.

Appearing at the recent Hall of Flowers event to promote the brand, the actress smoked on Freak Brothers Legend OG, putting her in a silly state of bliss.

“This guy had me going right here!” Haddish said, pointing to the half-empty bag. “I’m going, but I’m functioning. I’m happy.”

The Bad Trip star’s appearance at Hall of Flowers wasn’t her first. She recalled attending 2018, stocking up on 24-karat gold-wrapped joints from Caviar Gold.

“Whatever happened to them?!” Haddish wondered, referring to the brand that has since re-entered the market, minus the signature metallic coating.

Despite the constant revolving door of brands, Haddish commented that events like Hall of Flowers (and its plethora of discounted samples) are a reminder of how far the cannabis industry has come.

“I remember the 1900s when you had to talk to the weed man if you didn’t feel like it; you had to hear his problems be a therapist just to get an eighth,” Haddish laughed.

The Freak Brothers cannabis line was launched in partnership with Cookies and is available in select dispensaries throughout California. The animated series is streaming for free on Tubi—and if you ask Haddish, the pair are best enjoyed in tandem.
