Those who like to consume cannabis may be inclined to watch a scary movie after smoking a fat joint. But choosing the right frightening film for a high mind is an art form. A bit of silliness is always fun and some gore may be tolerable, but this is not the right time for a downright terrifying viewing.

Here is a solid list featuring the best silly, kind of creepy movies that are perfect for a good cannabis high on a cool, fall night.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Fortune is not on the side of the leads of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, a pair of hillbillies who are excited to see their new-to-them ramshackle mountain cabin. Bougie college kids happen upon them as they journey to their new vacation home, and after a series of slapstick misfortunes, the group mistakes the lovable doofuses for serial killers. Fumble along with the sweet heroes in a strange meeting of slasher and comedy that works whether you are stoned or not.

Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical

Though the phrase “reefer madness” is likened to a wave of anti-cannabis reports, the 2005 musical is anything but. Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical is an ironic reimagining that pokes fun at the outlandish points made in the 1936 propaganda film. The made-for-television movie recently celebrated 25 years with a live revival.

Reefer Madness is technically not a scary film, nor is it Halloween-themed. However, it does interestingly play with fear, making it a solid choice for a more laid-back cannabis movie night.

Scary Movie

The Scary Movie universe is vast, but starting at the beginning is a must. Plus, the first installment of this five-part franchise is arguably one of the best. The Wayans Brothers were at the helm for the first two movies, a fact made clear by the hilarious bits and character arcs. These spoofs turn classic horror tropes on their head, mocking once-terrifying scenes from beloved classics like Scream and Saw. If you’re not into scary movies but in the mood for something “scary,” try Scary Movie.

Star Leaf

This cannabis-themed thriller follows a group of friends seeking an alien cannabis strain in the forested Pacific Northwest. Star Leaf, the SYFY original, takes viewers along as the buddies hunt for an out-of-this-world high that could also cure one of the group’s PTSD. Instead, they are stalked by the weed’s extraterrestrial guardians in a thrilling quest. As the story unravels, it becomes increasingly difficult to tell what is real.

Ernest Scared Stupid

This is the Halloween installment of the treasured 1990s Ernest film series. In Ernest Scared Stupid our amiable hero accidentally lets a troll loose in his hometown. After the troll turns his dog and some kids into wood, Ernest teams up with the local psychic (Eartha Kitt) to banish the beast. Get silly at the spooky sesh with this vintage slapstick feature.

#Horror

When it comes to spooky seasons, middle school has to be one of the most frightening. The fear intrinsic to this period of life is underscored in Hashtag Horror. Six girls have a sleepover at a friend’s who happens to live in a glass-paned mansion in the woods. The group plays a social media game that quickly diverts into bullying, and eventually, murder.

This film is well-acted, beautiful to look at, and pretty scary while also being kind of hilarious. As one reviewer perfectly put it, the movie was “unintentionally campy” with “ridiculous plotting and dialogue.” Those who love horrible movies will not regret selecting #Horror.

Suspiria

The original Suspiria (1977) is a work of art. And while it was scary for decades after it came out, the aged effects take some of the sting off today. This might take some out of the movie magic, but it could be ideal for many THC-infused minds. Join the main character as she realizes the prestigious dance school she recently started attending may be a front for something sinister. Suspiria has dark themes and, despite its dated effects, may still be too scary to many, so use discretion before choosing this one.

Troll

Listeners of How Did This Get Made already know all about this 1986 film, where the characters are curiously named Harry Potter and Harry Potter Jr long before J.K. Rowling wrote her tales. While there is no quidditch, the film takes viewers into a more terrifying world of magic. The plot follows a troll king’s quest to become human in a genre stew of fantasy, horror, and a little comedy. Don’t forget about Troll when seeking stoner-friendly Halloween movies.

Scary movies can be silly, too

Comedies are often a go-to movie choice for a smoke sesh, but around October, scary options may be more enticing. These spooky movies are just silly enough that they won’t freak out a high person too much while still getting the group into the Halloween spirit.
