In an announcement literally no one saw coming, cannabis icon Snoop Dogg said last week he was giving up smoking. In an Instagram post, Snoop said that after many conversations with family, he decided to “give up smoke,” asking for privacy. But was he talking about cannabis?

Speculation around the announcement centered on health concerns. Some wondered whether an edibles line was in the works, while others thought it was some sort of elaborate prank. It turns out we now have an answer.

In a follow-up post, Snoop Dogg was revealed to be a new spokesperson for Solo Stove, a smokeless fire pit. In a video, the rapper said he’s, “Done with the coughing and my clothes smelling all sticky icky.”

The internet collectively sighed at the “gotcha” moment, after a media firestorm incorrectly assumed he had been talking about weed (GreenState included). It was an important lesson: always read between the lines.

Snoop has long been associated with cannabis, calling out the plant in countless songs and media appearances. He famously employed a professional blunt roller at a cost of $150,000 per year, but that person may now be out of a job.

The Drop It Like It’s Hot rapper has had multiple forays into the legal marijuana industry, including his own brands and investment firm. Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel even commemorated his birthday (which happens to be halfway to 4/20) by pronouncing it DoggFather Day

Snoop Dogg hinted that he was cutting back on cannabis earlier this year, allegedly telling the Daily Mail becoming a grandfather put things in perspective.

“The only way I can do that is to take precautionary steps as far as how I move, who I hang out with, where I go out, my intake, what am I intaking? Am I doing extracurricular or am I just doing what I’m supposed to be doing?” he reportedly said.

It remains to be seen whether the rapper will continue to vape or pop gummies, but it would be hard to believe Snoop is giving up THC completely. However, individual relationships with the plant often evolve, and it may be that Snoop is simply ready for a T-break. Looking at the Instagram comments, the community is seemingly behind the rapper regardless of his current cannabis habits.
